• Increasingly alienated neighborhood relations in Shanghai
In 2016, the Social Conditions and Public Opinion Survey Center of the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Statistics launched the 2016 Citizen-Neighborhood Survey. The survey results show that citizens are generally satisfied with the current neighborhood relations. However, the data is intriguing: 43.6% of the respondents did not know much about the neighbors next door, and 28.9% of the respondents only had a partial understanding; for unfamiliar neighbors, only 27.5% took the initiative to say hello.
"I still want to say hello when I meet my neighbors in the corridor, but I can't get the words out of my mouth. I'm going to suffer from embarrassment." 28-year-old Miss Fan lives in an old community in Hongkou District. Greeting each other may seem simple, but it is actually quite difficult. "But this is not very frequent. After all, the commute time is different, and it will not always appear in the corridor on weekends."
In the above survey, there is a set of data that may explain this embarrassing scene: among the interviewed citizens who are not satisfied with the neighborhood relationship, the most dissatisfied factor is "not knowing each other and treating each other as strangers", accounting for 32.4% %.
This may indicate that neighborhood awareness is still valued, and there is a desire to communicate among neighbors, but there are few opportunities for communication.
