Renewal of Ground Space
Kiu Wing Building, Hongkong
Hong Kong is a city that bans smoking in public places. However, Hong Kong people work and live at a fast pace, so the rate of Hong Kong people who smoke is very high. View more about this case study.
In this case, we notice that people smoke on the staircase usually which is illegal. If there’s a space that allows them to enjoy a smoke legally, then they will not need to d so.
For this smoke room, we place it on the mezzanine floor and ensure that it is completely isolated from other private spaces, and has enough ventilation rate for the specified number of people. Also, the room needs enough clear height and a reasonable exhaust path. For a small design concept, I separate this space into two rooms, one public and one private. None of them provide seats because I don't want them to stay in this room for a long time, I want to them go home as soon as finish smoking. But if someone needs a private space to make a phone call or something while you smoke, then the private room can help.
