Toolkit 31:
Demolishing Blocks and Rebuilding as Additional Floors

Option 1:

Directly building upon (suitable for 2-3 levels low-rise buildings)

This toolkit explores the possibility of releasing more ground-floor spaces by demolishing some of the building blocks and rebuilding them on top of others as additional floors. The first option is to directly build the building block on top of another. This is only viable for 2-3 levels of low-rise buildings using lightweight materials.

  • Remove the building on the corner and rebuild it on top of the east block

  • Introduce ground floor communal facilities to the vacant area and backyard

Option 2:

Dispersive Incremental System (suitable for higher blocks)

The second option is a dispersive incremental system, which is suitable for higher blocks to disperse the load.

Click the button below to see more information on the incremental system.

  • Remove the building on the corner and divide it  into separate floors on top of several other blocks.

  • Build structures to hold the additional floors and reserve 1-2 levels in between for indoor communal activities.
